SPORTS IN 2006

In 2006, as compared to 2003, the number of sports associations decreased by 2.11% and the number of chess associations by 9.59%, while the number of hunting associations increased by 2.81%. In sports associations, the number of active members was by 5.75% higher, while this number did not significantly change in chess and hunting associations. There were 15.32% less sports and chess associations and bridge clubs that participated in international competitions in 2006 than in 2003. The share of women in the number of active members in 2006 amounted to 17.34%.

The highest share of women was recorded in skating, 92.24%, in dance sport, 81.32%, in volleyball, 77.27%, in diving, 75%, gymnastics, 73.33% and in horse-riding, 53.38%.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and data collection

Data given in this Release are obtained from statistical surveys through the Statistical Report on Sports Associations (SPORT-1 form), the Statistical Report on Chess Associations and Bridge Clubs (SPORT-2 form), the Statistical Report on Hunting Associations (SPORT-3 form) and the Statistical Report on Sports and Recreation Centres (SPORT-4 form), which are filled in by sports, chess and hunting associations and bridge clubs as well as by sports and recreation centres. Data are collected every third year.

Coverage and comparability

The statistical survey covers all sports, chess and hunting associations and bridge clubs as well as sports and recreation centres that were active in 2006. Data are comparable to those from previous years, save for bridge clubs, which have been observed only since 2003.

Definitions and explanations

Sports associations are voluntary associations of citizens established for engagement in sports, participation on sports competitions, sports recreation and training and promotion of a particular sports branch. They are registered with the Croatian sports federations for a particular sports branch.

Chess associations are voluntary associations of citizens established for engagement in chess, participation in chess competitions and the promotion of chess. They are registered with the Croatian Chess Federation.

Bridge clubs are voluntary associations of citizens established for engagement in bridge and participation in bridge competitions. They are registered with the Croatian Bridge Federation.

Hunting associations are voluntary associations of citizens established for engagement in hunting, breeding and protection of game and preservation of biological balance in their natural habitats. They are registered with the Croatian Hunting Federation.

Sports and recreation centres render services to citizens in the field of sports and recreation. They also manage and maintain sports facilities.

Sports facilities are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, arenas, stadiums and other facilities as well as natural arranged spaces that meet criteria for the engagement in a particular branch (or branches) of sports.

Class i sports facilities are facilities that, according to regulations on sports competitions, meet criteria for holding international competitions and European and world championships.

The operation of sports, chess and hunting associations, bridge clubs and sports and recreation centres is regulated by the Sports Act (NN, No. 111/97) and the Associations Act (NN, No. 88/01).
