According to provisional data, total export of the Republic of Croatia amounted to 12.5 billion kuna in January 2022 and it was 4.0 billion kuna, or 47.0%, higher than in January 2021. At the same time, the total import of the Republic of Croatia amounted to 19.1 billion kuna, which was an increase of 6.0 billion kuna, or 45.8%, compared to the same period of 2021.
Foreign trade deficit of the Republic of Croatia in January 2022 amounted to 6.5 billion kuna, which was 2.0 billion kuna, or 43.7%, more than in the same period of 2021.
In January 2022, coverage of import by export was 65.7%, while in January 2021, it amounted to 65.2%.
The most important foreign trade partners in export of the Republic of Croatia are EU Member States. Export to EU Member States in January 2022 accounted for 73.7% of the total export and increased by 55.1% compared to January 2021.
The largest foreign trade partners from the EU in January 2022, observing data in kuna, were Slovenia – increase in export of 108.9% (share in total export of 14.6%), Italy – increase in export of 36.5% (share in total export of 11.8%) and Hungary – increase in export of 104.2% (share in total export of 11.8%).
Export to non-EU Member States increased by 28.2% in January 2022 compared to January 2021, and accounted for 26.3% of the total export. The largest foreign trade partners outside the EU, with which the Republic of Croatia realised trade in goods in January 2022, were its neighbouring countries Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Serbia. In the observed period, export to Bosnia and Herzegovina increased by 67.2% (share in total export of 8.2%), while export to Serbia increased by 52.4% (share in total export of 4.5%).
The most important foreign trade partners in import of the Republic of Croatia were also EU Member States. Import from EU Member States in January 2022 accounted for 72.5% of the total import and increased by 29.6% compared to January 2021.
Import from Germany increased by 27.1% (share in total import of 13.2%), from Italy by 41.0% (share in total import of 12.4%) and from Slovenia by 43.5% (share in total import of 11.0%).
Import from non-EU Member States in January 2022 accounted for 27.5% of total import of the Republic of Croatia and increased by 117.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. In January 2022, import from Bosnia and Herzegovina increased by 51.1%, which accounted for 3.7% of the total import, and mostly refers to electricity. Import from the USA also increased significantly in January 2022, by 798.5%, which accounted for 8.7% of the total import, and mostly refers to liquefied natural gas.
Foreign Trade in Goods of the Republic of Croatia with the Russian Federation and Ukraine
In January 2022, export to the Russian Federation increased by 7.5% compared to January 2021 (share in total export of 0.7%) and the most exported goods were general-purpose industrial machinery, n. e. c., worth 29.4 million kuna, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, worth 23.6 million kuna, and clothes, worth 13.0 million kuna.
Import from the Russian Federation decreased by 34.8% (share in total import of 0.4%) and the most imported goods were non-ferrous metals, worth 60.1 million kuna, hard coal, coke and briquette, worth 8.3 million kuna, and products of cork and wood, worth 5.4 million kuna. A significant decrease was recorded in the import of petroleum and petroleum products in January 2022 compared to January 2021, worth 34.3 million kuna, or 99.3%.
In 2021, export to the Russian Federation, according to provisional data, amounted to 1.5 billion kuna and increased by 15.7% (share in total export of 1.1%) compared to 2020. The most exported goods were medicinal and pharmaceutical products, worth 525.4 million kuna, oil seeds and oleaginous fruits, worth 298.2 million kuna, and clothes, worth 147.8 million kuna.
At the same time, import from the Russian Federation amounted to 3.5 billion kuna, which was an increase of 1.7 billion kuna, or 99.0%, compared to 2020 (share in total import of 1.6%). The most imported goods were petroleum and petroleum products, worth 1.4 billion kuna, non-ferrous metals, worth 779.5 million kuna, and gas, natural and industrial, worth 558.0 million kuna.
Export to Ukraine increased by 147.7% in January 2022 compared to January 2021 (share in total export of 0.3%) and the most exported goods were special-purpose machinery, worth 15.4 million kuna, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, worth 8.2 million kuna, and essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations, worth 5.3 million kuna.
At the same time, import from Ukraine increased by 113.6% (share in total import of 0.3%) and the most imported goods were synthetic fertilisers, worth 18.8 million kuna, cereals and cereal products, worth 7.4 million kuna, and products of cork and wood, worth 7.1 million kuna.
In 2021, export to Ukraine, according to provisional data, amounted to 435.6 million kuna and decreased by 0.8% (share in total export of 0.3%) compared to 2020. The most exported goods were medicinal and pharmaceutical products, worth 180.8 million kuna, essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations, worth 53.4 million kuna, and general-purpose machinery, n. e. c., in the same value.
In the observed period, import from Ukraine amounted to 330.8 million kuna and increased by 49.9 million kuna, or 17.8%, compared to 2020 (share in total import of 0.2%). The most imported goods were electrical machinery, appliances and devices, worth 54.3 million kuna, products of cork and wood, worth 44.9 million kuna, and non-metallic mineral products, worth 26.1 million kuna.
