FOREIGN TRADE IN GOODS

The total export of the Republic of Croatia from January to June 2022, according to provisional data, amounted to 86.5 billion kuna and it was 20.1 billion kuna, or 30.2%, higher than in the same period of 2021. The total import of the Republic of Croatia amounted to 148.8 billion kuna, which was an increase of 48.3 billion kuna, or 48.1%, compared to the same period of 2021.

Foreign trade deficit of the Republic of Croatia from January to June 2022 amounted to 62.3 billion kuna, which was 28.2 billion kuna, or 82.9%, more than in the same period of 2021.

In the period from January to June 2022, coverage of import by export was 58.1%, while in the period from January to June 2021, it amounted to 66.1%.

The most important foreign trade partners in export of the Republic of Croatia are EU Member States. Export to EU Member States from January to June 2022 accounted for 70.1% of the total export and increased by 34.5% compared to the same period of 2021.

From January to June 2022, the largest foreign trade partners from the EU, observing data in kuna, were Italy – increase in export of 30.8% (share in total export of 12.6%), Germany – increase in export of 24.7% (share in total export of 11.8%) and Hungary – increase in export of 79.5% (share in total export of 11.6%).

Export to non-EU Member States increased by 21.3% from January to June 2022 compared to the same period of 2021, and accounted for 29.9% of the total export. The largest foreign trade partners outside the EU, with which the Republic of Croatia realised trade in goods from January to June 2022, were its neighbouring countries Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. In the observed period, export to Bosnia and Herzegovina increased by 62.9% (share in total export of 9.7%), while export to Serbia increased by 46.5% (share in total export of 4.8%).

The most important foreign trade partners in import of the Republic of Croatia are EU Member States. Import from EU Member States from January to June 2022 accounted for 73.0% of total import and increased by 39.3% compared to the same period of 2021.

Import from Italy increased by 65.8% (share in total import of 13.7%), from Germany by 25.1% (share in total import of 12.7%) and from Slovenia by 50.3% (share in total import of 11.2%).

Import from non-EU Member States from January to June 2022 accounted for 27.0% of total import of the Republic of Croatia and increased by 78.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. From January to June 2022 compared to the same period of 2021, import from the USA increased significantly, by 509.5%, which accounted for 6.0% of the total import, and mostly refers to liquefied natural gas.

Foreign Trade in Goods of the Republic of Croatia with the Russian Federation and Ukraine

From January to May 2022, export to the Russian Federation amounted to 505.3 million kuna and decreased by 23.3% compared to the same period of 2021 (share in total export of 0.6%). The most exported goods were medicinal and pharmaceutical products, worth 249.4 million kuna, general-purpose industrial machinery, n. e. c., worth 66.1 million kuna, and essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations, worth 43.2 million kuna. Clothes were exported in the amount of 18.4 million kuna, which was a decrease of 80.7%, or 76.9 million kuna, for the observed period.

Import from the Russian Federation in the same period amounted to 2.1 billion kuna and increased by 41.2% (share in total import of 1.4%). The most imported goods were petroleum and petroleum products (oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar, and lubricating oils and other oils), worth 854.6 million kuna (16% more than in the same period of the previous year), hard coal, coke and briquette, worth 750.5 million kuna (547.7% more than in the same period of the previous year), and non-ferrous metals, worth 405.3 million kuna. In the period from January to June 2022, the import of gas, natural and industrial, decreased by 107.5 million kuna, or 91.3%, compared to the same period of 2021.

From January to June 2022, export to Ukraine amounted to 178.4 million kuna and decreased by 14.2% compared to the same period of 2021 (share in total export of 0.2%). The most exported goods were special-purpose machinery, worth 39.9 million kuna, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, worth 25.2 million kuna, and general-purpose industrial machinery, n. e. c., worth 15.3 million kuna. In the observed period, the export of medicinal and pharmaceutical products decreased the most, by 75.3%, or 76.9 million kuna.

At the same period, import from Ukraine amounted to 242.5 million kuna and increased by 70.1% (share in total import of 0.2%) and the most imported goods were products of cork and wood, worth 51.4 million kuna, cereals and cereal products, worth 30.8 million kuna, and electrical machinery, appliances and devices, worth 26.9 million kuna. In the observed period, the import of products of cork and wood increased the most, by 320.2%, or 39.1 million kuna, as well as the import of cereals and cereal products, by 28.9 million kuna.
