Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

In October 2021, the real working-day adjusted turnover of retail trade in the Republic of Croatia increased at the annual level, by 9.2%, compared to the same month of the previous year, which was the ninth consecutive month of growth after the decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This turnover was 6.3% higher than in October 2019.

Comparing the first ten months of 2021 with the same period of 2019, the real working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was still higher by 5.8%.

In October 2021, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 2.1% lower than in the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover increased by 13.9% in nominal terms in October 2021, compared to the same month of the previous year. All of the eleven trade branches recorded an increase in turnover, with the largest one being recorded in Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 37.1%), Textile, clothing and footwear (of 19.8%) and Computer equipment, books and newspapers (of 15.2%).

In October 2021, as compared to October 2019, the nominal retail trade turnover increased by 10.1%, with the largest increase being recorded in trade branch Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 21.9%). In the first ten months of this year, compared to the same period of 2019, this turnover increased by 8.0%, while a decrease in turnover was recorded by only two trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 6.8%) and Textile, clothing and footwear (of 3.0%).

In October 2021, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, only three trade branches recorded an increase in turnover, with the largest one being recorded in trade branches Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 7.8%), Textile, clothing and footwear (of 7.3%) and Electrical household appliances, furniture and other household articles (of 1.7%), while the remaining eight trade branches recorded a decrease in turnover. The largest decrease in turnover was recorded in trade branches Other non-store retail sale (of 16.2%), Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 10.0%) and Specialised stores with food products predominating (of 9.6%).

In October 2021 compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet decreased by 10.0%.
