Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Croatia, in November 2020, the real turnover of retail trade recorded the lowest decrease at the annual level, of 0.7%, compared to the same month of the previous year.

In November 2020, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 1.5% higher compared to the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover decreased by 2.6% in nominal terms in November 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year. The turnover decreased the most in the following trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles, motorcycles and related parts and accessories, by 26.6%, and Textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods, by 21.4%.

In November 2020, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, there was an increase in turnover of only two trade branches, while other trade branches recorded a decrease in turnover. The increase in turnover was realised in the following trade branches: Retail sale via Internet or via mail order, of 42.6%, and Electrical household appliances, furniture and other household articles, of 1.1%, while the largest decrease in turnover was recorded in the following trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles, of 13.8%, Automotive fuels and lubricants and Specialised stores with food, of 10.8% in each group.

In November 2020, as compared to the previous month, the turnover of Retail sale via Internet increased by as much as 42.6%, as a result of the “Black Friday” and the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
