Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

In January 2022, the real working-day adjusted turnover of retail trade in the Republic of Croatia increased at the annual level, by 2.0% compared to the same month of the previous year, thus increasing continuously since February 2021, when it decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This turnover was 7.9% higher than in January 2019.

In January 2022, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 3.9% lower than in the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover increased by 10.0% in nominal terms in January 2022, compared to the same month of the previous year. All of the eleven trade branches recorded an increase in turnover, with the largest one being recorded in Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 25.8%), Dispensing chemists, medical and orthopaedic goods (of 18.1%) and Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 17.2%).

In January 2022, as compared to January 2019, the nominal retail trade turnover increased by 16.7%, with the largest increase being recorded in trade branches Computer equipment, books and newspapers (of 24.2%), Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 23.9%) and Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 23.4%).

In January 2022, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, all trade branches had a decrease in turnover. The largest decrease in turnover was recorded in trade branches Other non-specialised stores (of 39.5%), Textile, clothing and footwear (of 33.7%) and Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 33.6%).

In January 2022, as compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet decreased by 33.6%.
