Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

Due to the gradual cancellation of epidemiological measures introduced to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic, in May 2020, the real turnover of retail trade realised a record increase at the monthly level, of 23.5%, compared to the previous month, according to seasonally and working-day adjusted indices.

In May 2020, the real turnover of retail trade continued to decrease at the annual level compared to the same month of the previous year and, according to working-day adjusted indices, a real decrease of 7.8% is noticeable.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover decreased by 10.2% in nominal terms in May 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year. An increase in turnover was recorded in only two trade branches: Retail sale via Internet or via mail order, of 9.2%, and Other non-specialised stores with non-food products predominating, of 3.6%, while other trade branches recorded a decrease.

After last month’s record fall in the nominal turnover of trade branch Textile, clothing and footwear, according to gross, unadjusted indices, the highest increase was recorded in the turnover of this trade branch in May 2020 compared to the previous month, due to the gradual cancellation of epidemiological measures.
