Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

In June 2021, the real working-day adjusted turnover of retail trade in the Republic of Croatia increased at the annual level, by as much as 10.9%, compared to the same month of the previous year, which was the fifth consecutive month of growth after the decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This turnover was 4.0% higher than in June 2019.

Comparing the first six months of 2021 with the same period of 2019, the real working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was still higher by 5.3%.

In June 2021, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 3.8% lower than in the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover increased by 13.6% in nominal terms in June 2021, compared to the same month of the previous year. Ten trade branches realised an increase in turnover, with the largest one being realised in the following branches: Other non-store retail sale (of 38.8%) and Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 33.5%).

A decrease in the nominal retail trade turnover in June 2021, as compared to the same month of the previous year, was recorded only in the trade branch Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles, motorcycles and related parts and accessories (of 1.8%).

In June 2021, as compared to June 2019, the nominal retail trade turnover increased by 6.4%, with the largest increase being recorded in sale, in the trade branch Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 36.7%). In the first six months of this year, compared to the same period of 2019, this turnover increased by 6.5%, while a decrease in turnover was recorded by only two trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories (of 8.2%) and Textile, clothing and footwear (of 7.7%).

In June 2021, compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, the only decrease in nominal retail trade turnover was recorded in the trade branch Computer equipment, books and other (of 3.8%). All other trade branches recorded an increase, with the largest one being recorded in the following trade branches: Textile, clothing and footwear (of 22.5%), Other non-store retail sale (of 18.7%) and Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 13.1%).

In June 2021, as compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet increased by 2.4%.
