Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

In July 2021, the real working-day adjusted turnover of retail trade in the Republic of Croatia increased at the annual level, by 12.8%, compared to the same month of the previous year, which was the sixth consecutive month of growth after the decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This turnover was 5.3% higher than in July 2019.

Comparing the first seven months of 2021 with the same period of 2019, the real working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was still higher by 5.3%.

In July 2021, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 2.2% higher than in the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover increased by 16.9% in nominal terms in July 2021, compared to the same month of the previous year. Ten trade branches (which generate 99.3% of total retail trade turnover) recorded an increase in turnover, with the largest one being recorded in Other non-store retail sale (of 59.7%) and Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 33.2%), which also had the largest impact on the increase in the total trade turnover (of 6.5%).

A decrease in nominal turnover in July 2021 compared to the same month of the previous year was recorded only in trade branch Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 4.8%).

In July 2021, as compared to July 2019, the nominal retail trade turnover increased by 7.9%, with the largest increase being recorded in trade branch Other non-store retail sale (of 22.8%). In the first seven months of this year, compared to the same period of 2019, this turnover increased by 6.8%, while a decrease in turnover was recorded by only two trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 8.5%) and Textile, clothing and footwear (of 5.6%).

In July 2021, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, there was an increase in turnover in eight trade branches. The largest increase in turnover was realised in trade branches Other non-store retail sale (of 38.6%), Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 25.2%) and Non-specialised stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating (of 24.9%), while tree trade branches recorded a decrease in turnover. The largest decrease was recorded in trade branches Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 3.5%), Textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 2.2%) and Electrical household appliances, furniture and other household articles (of 2.1%).

In July 2021 compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet decreased by 3.5%.
