Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

In August 2021, the real working-day adjusted turnover of retail trade in the Republic of Croatia increased at the annual level, by 18.3%, compared to the same month of the previous year, which was the seventh consecutive month of growth after the decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This turnover was 8.1% higher than in August 2019.

Comparing the first eight months of 2021 with the same period of 2019, the real working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was still higher by 5.7%.

In August 2021, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 1.8% higher than in the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover increased by 23.0% in nominal terms in August 2021, compared to the same month of the previous year. All of the eleven trade branches recorded an increase in turnover, with the largest one being recorded in Other non-store retail sale (of 73.6%), Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 36.0%) and Computer equipment, books and newspapers (of 31.6%).

In August 2021, as compared to August 2019, the nominal retail trade turnover increased by 10.7%, with the largest increase being recorded in trade branch Other non-store retail sale (of 39.7%). In the first eight months of this year, compared to the same period of 2019, this turnover increased by 7.4%, while a decrease in turnover was recorded by only two trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 8.6%) and Textile, clothing and footwear (of 3.6%).

In August 2021, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, there was an increase in turnover in seven trade branches. The largest increase in turnover was realised in trade branches Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 55.1%), Specialised stores with food products predominating (of 7.5%) and Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 4.6%), while four trade branches had a decrease in turnover. The largest decrease in turnover was recorded in the following trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 23.5%), Electrical household appliances, furniture and other household articles (of 8.8%), and Textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 5.4%).

In August 2021 compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet increased by 55.1%.
