Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

In September 2021, the real working-day adjusted turnover of retail trade in the Republic of Croatia increased at the annual level, by 14.5%, compared to the same month of the previous year, which was the eighth consecutive month of growth after the decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This turnover was 6.2% higher than in September 2019.

Comparing the first nine months of 2021 with the same period of 2019, the real working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was still higher by 5.8%. In September 2021, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover in real terms remained at the same level as in the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover increased by 19.2% in nominal terms in September 2021, compared to the same month of the previous year. Ten trade branches recorded an increase in turnover, with the largest one being recorded in Other non-store retail sale (of 53.5%), Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 40.2%), Specialised stores with food products predominating (of 23.3%) and Other non-specialised stores with non-food products predominating (of 20.2%).

In September 2021, as compared to September 2019, the nominal retail trade turnover increased by 10.6%, with the largest increase being recorded in trade branch Other non-store retail sale (of 20.2%). In the first nine months of this year, compared to the same period of 2019, this turnover increased by 7.7%, while a decrease in turnover was recorded by only two trade branches: Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 7.4%) and Textile, clothing and footwear (of 4.2%).

In September 2021, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, four trade branches recorded an increase turnover, with the largest one being recorded in trade branches Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles (of 14.8%), Electrical household appliances, furniture and other household articles (of 5.0%), Dispensing chemists, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (of 1.4%) and Computer equipment, books and newspapers (of 1.2%), while the remaining seven trade branches recorded a decrease in turnover. The largest decrease in turnover was recorded in trade branches Non-specialised stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating (of 21.7%), Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 18.8%), Automotive fuels and lubricants (of 18.4%), Other non-store retail sale (of 17.9%) and Specialised stores with food products predominating (of 12.2%).

In September 2021, as compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet decreased by 18.8%.
