NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source and methods of data collection

Data on road cross–border traffic of motor vehicles, passengersr and goods are collected by monthly reports (Form PA/M –31) that are filled in by custom offices on the road border crossings.

The source of data for cross–border traffic of passenger cars, buses, motorcycles and their passengers are the records of border police of the Ministry of Interior. For the cross-border traffic of freight vehicles and goods the source of data are records of custom offices on the road border crossings. This survey has been conducted monthly since January 1st 1993.

Data on passenger traffic in railway, maritime and air traffic are collected from custom offices for every railway, maritime and air passenger border crossing. Custom office fills in the “Monthly Survey on Cross–Border Traffic of Passengers (in Railway, Maritime and Air Traffic)”, Form PA/M – 33, using records of border police on the border crossings. This survey has been conducted monthly since January 1st 1998.

Coverage

Data on road cross–border traffic of motor vehicles cover all road motor vehicles, pasengers and goods that crossed the border and arrived in or departed from the Republic of Croatia. Since January 1st 2001 the transport of passengers in freight vehicles has been of no longer monitored. Empty freight vehicles are  monitored instead.

Road motor vehicles are monitored on the entry into and exit out of  the country and are grouped as passenger cars, buses, motorcycles and freight vehicles (separately are monitored freight vehicles with goods in import and freight vehicles with goods in transit through our country). Vehicles are sorted as with domestic plates or with foreign plates, depending on the country of registration.

Passengers in road cross–border traffic are monitored as foreign or domestic ones, depending on the citizenship.

Data on entry and exit of passenger cars, buses, motorcycles and their passengers include vehicles and passengers in transit through our country.

All border crossings with custom offices are included. Survey covers 58 border crossings: 23 to Slovenia, 6 to Hungary, 19 to Bosnia and Herzegovina and 10 to Yugoslavia.

Local cross–border traffic between neighbouring countries is not defined by corresponding agreements, so the separate monitoring is not yet possible.

Data on cross–border traffic of passengers in railway, maritime and air traffic covers all existing railway, maritime and air border crossings, both year-round and seasonal ones.

Definition
