NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Data in this Release are based on the Monthly Report on Retail Trade (Form TRG-1). This survey has been carried out since 1st January 1998.

Method of data collection

Methodology for this survey is based on the Eurostat recommendations. Reporting units are enterprises/trade companies classified by their prevailing activity into retail trade or sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (according to the NCEA in division 50 and groups 52.1 - 52.6). Selected enterprises/trade companies engaged in other activities, but executing the above mentioned ones, are also included. Persons employed in crafts and trades are excluded.

Coverage

The survey is carried out by a sampling method. The evaluation of the whole group is based on the results obtained through samples. The sample covers all big and medium-sized enterprises, while small enterprises/trade companies are selected by random sample method. The Register of Business Entities of the Central Bureau of Statistics, supplemented with information taken over from data bases of the Financial Agency and the Tax Administration Office of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Croatia (as per last available situation) is used as s sampling framework. In the year 2003 the sampling framework was supplemented with data of the Financial Agency, with the situation as at the end of 2001 and  January - September 2002, and the Tax Administration Office, with the situation as at the end of 2001. Due to the lack of registers of high quality, the Central Bureau of Statistics has done some additional work on the sampling framework. The quality of results obtained by this survey depends strictly on the updating of registers, which represent the framework for the selection of the sample. The sample is divided into strata according to the prevailing activity and the size of the enterprise/trade company.

Enterprises/trade companies are divided by prevailing activity on the basis of the National Classification of Economic Activities, NCEA (NN, Nos. 3/97 and 7/97). By size, they are divided into small, medium - sized and big ones. When dividing enterprises/trade companies by size, the following criteria must be fulfilled: the balance after subtracting the loss presented in the fixed assets, income in 12 months before making up the balance and the annual average of persons in employment.

Definitions

Turnover is a total value of all goods sold and services provided on the market in a month, irrespective of whether paid up or not. It also includes the value added tax. Tables 1 and 2 show indices of total turnover realised by enterprises/trade companies in all the activities they are engaged in, as well as turnover indices realised through retail trade activities. Data on total turnover and on retail trade turnover have been gained from enterprises/trade companies that are classified by their prevailing activity into retail trade or sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles.

Other enterprises/trade companies have presented only retail trade turnover.

By the same principle used to present turnover, table 3 includes indices of total number of persons employed in retail trade.

Data on the retail trade turnover are presented in two ways: either according to the prevailing activity in which business entities are classified (tables 1 and 2) or according to the trade branches (table 4). Trade branches are the actual assortment of sale in the retail trade, where goods are also classified according to the National Classification of Economic Activities.

Number of employed persons includes: paid workers; owners, co-owners and unpaid family members who work in the enterprise; persons who work out of the premises of their original enterprise (for example, sales agents, couriers, maintenance and repair teams); persons absent for a short period of time (for example, because of illness, maternity leave, paid or special leave); persons who are on strike; short-time workers; workers who work at home; seasonal workers, trainees. Workers absent for indefinite period of time, persons working in the respective enterprise but sent by another enterprise (for example, persons who carry out maintenance or repairs in an enterprise on behalf of another enterprise) are not included; persons completing their military service.

Stocks in retail trade are presented with the situation as at the end of a month, by selling price with VAT included.

Results are shown in the form of nominal and real indices. Real indices are calculated by deflating nominal indices by price index in retail trade, excluding the electricity price.
