TOURISM – CUMULATIVE DATA¹⁾

Period January - May 2004

In the period from January to May 2004, as compared to the same period of 2003, the number of both turist arrivals and tourist nights in the Republic of Croatia increased by 10% in all commercial accommodation facilities.

Tourists realised 5 254 576 tourist nights: 24% by domestic tourists and 76% by foreign tourists.

The number of domestic tourist nights in the period from January to May 2004 increased by 6% and foreign tourist nights by 12%.

Concerning the structure of foreign tourist nights, the most of them (80%) were realised by tourists from Germany (36.5%), Austria (13.2%), Italy (9.1%), Slovenia (8.1%), France (5.8%), Great Britain (4.5%) and and the Czech Republic (2.8%). Tourists from other countries realised 20% tourist nights.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Source

Data on turnover of tourists (number of tourist arrivals and tourist nights) are collected from regular monthly report (Form TU-11). Reports are usually made on the basis of reception records in guest books.

Methods of data collection

The methodology of this survey is based on the recommendations Eurostat and World Tourist Organisation (WTO).

Reporting units are all business entities (enterprises/trade companies, craftsmen, co-operatives, institutions, associations etc.) and their parts engaged in providing accommodation services in tourism: health institutions for their facilities, in which persons stay for medical rehabilitation (costs are on persons themselves); business entities and their parts engaged in organisation and arrangements of tourists’ stay in rural households; tourist boards and other bodies competent for private rooms, apartments or summer houses directly rented by private persons/households; business entities and their parts for their vacation facilities; business entities that founded or take care of mountain resorts; military institutions for their catering establishments; business entities who use schools, homes and similar facilities as temporary vacation facilities during school vacations; business entities Sleeping and Restaurant Cars and business entities in river and sea water transport (only scheduled lines).

According to the Regulation on Classification, Minimal Standards and Categorisation of Accommodation Facilities, issued in Narodne novine, Nos. 57/95, 110/96, 24/97, 61/98., 137/98, 19/99, 39/99, 52/99, 43/00, 52/00, 57/00, 63/00, 18/01, 33/01, all acomodation facilities have been re-categorised into new types and categories.

All facilities that have not been categorised according to the mentioned Regulation are classified as Uncategorized facilities.

Coverage

Reports cover all legal entities and their parts and natural persons as well as households that rent accommodation facilities to tourists. They also include nautical ports.

Data do not include non-commercial tourist turnover (owner’s stay and stay of their relatives and friends in villas and summer houses). This is covered by a separate statistical survey (Form TU-11v).

Definitions

Tourist is every person who, outside his place of permanent residence, spends at least one night in a hotel or some other accommodation facility for reasons of rest, recreation, health, study, sport, religion, family, business, public tasks or meeting. Excluded are migrants, borderline workers, diplomats, military force members on their regular duties, displaced persons and nomads.

Residence is a place where a person came with an intention of permanent stay.

Tourist is registered in every place or facility where he stays and, therefore, in case of changing of place or facility he must register again, which results in data ambiguity. Consequently, the statistics register the number of tourist arrivals and not the number of tourists.

Domestic tourist is a person with permanent residence in the Republic of Croatia who spends at least one night in a hotel or some other accommodation facility outside their place of residence.

Foreign tourist is every person with permanent residence outside of the Republic of Croatia who temporarily resides in Croatia and who spends at least one night in a hotel or some other accommodation facility.

Territorial constitution

Data on counties, cities and municipalities are given by territorial constitution according to the Law on County, City and Municipality Areas in the Republic of Croatia (NN, Nos. 10/97, 124/97, 68/98, 117/99 and 128/99).
