GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT FOR REPUBLIC OF CROATIA

AND COUNTIES, 2004

This Release presents estimates of the gross domestic product in 2004, for the Republic of Croatia and counties, by economic activities.

The results are available at current prices and per capita.

Data related to counties are based on the final annual data on the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Republic of Croatia for 2004, which will be published during March.

It should be noted that the GDP per capita, at the county level, measures productivity and not the living standard in a county

METHODOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS

The purpose of a statistical survey

The purpose of the statistical survey is to estimate the gross value added (GVA) for the Republic of Croatia and counties by activities and the gross domestic product (GDP) for the Republic of Croatia and counties.

Sources and methods of data collection

Data sources for the calculation of GVA and GDP for the Republic of Croatia and counties are the national accounts data, annual business surveys, the Annual Report on Agriculture Production, annual data on persons in employment and salaries and various other statistical data.

Coverage

The calculation covers all activities, following the concept of the 1993 System of National Accounts (SNA 93) and the 1995 European System of Accounts (ESA 95).

Definitions

Regional accounts are a subsystem of national accounts in which specific spatial units (in this case, counties) are the main objects of observation  The concepts used in regional accounts are the same as those used in national accounts  A gross domestic product at market prices is the sum of values added by activities including items at the level of national economy that are not classified by activities, such as financial intermediation services indirectly measured (FISIM) as well as taxes on products less subsidies on products.

Other explanations

GVA and GDP for the Republic of Croatia and counties are calculated by using the indirect method. National GVA figures by activities were allocated to counties by applying adequate distribution keys.

Since the work on improving the methodology of the GDP and GVA calculation by counties is still in progress, it is possible that in forthcoming periods some revisions of the existing data will have to be done.
