STUDENTS ENROLLED ON PROFESSIONAL AND UNIVERSITY STUDY,

 WINTER SEMESTER OF 2006/2007 ACADEMIC YEAR

 

Students enrolled on institutions of higher education in the Republic of Croatia based either on the "old" programme (professional and university undergraduate study) or on the Bologna process (professional and specialist professional graduate study, undergraduate, graduate and integrated undergraduate and graduate university study) have been reported in this first release.

 

In the winter semester of the 2006/2007 academic year, the total of 136 129 students enrolled on institutions of higher education, which was by 2.4% more than in the previous academic year. There were 49 065 students enrolled on the first year, which was by 1.1% more enrolled on the first year than in the previous academic year (included are also students repeating the first year).

 

The share of female students was 54.1%, the same as in the 2005/2006 academic year.

 

There were 73.8% full-time and 26.2% part-time students enrolled. The most full-time students enrolled on faculties, 84.3% of them (8.8% on professional and 75.5% on university studies); 9.3% in polytechnics, 4.9% in schools of professional higher education and 1.5% in academies of art.

 

Out of the total number of students, 42.8% of them were enrolled or continued their studies according to the “old” programme, while 57.2% were enrolled according to the Bologna process.

 

The largest number of students were enrolled on undergraduate university study, 33.2% of them, 29.1% were enrolled on undergraduate university study according to the Bologna process, 20.3% were enrolled on professional study, 9.7% on undergraduate professional study and 9.7% on integrated undergraduate and graduate study. There were 770 students enrolled on specialist professional graduate study, while 22 students were enrolled on graduate university study.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

 

 

Source and method of data collection

 

Data are the result of the annual data processing on students enrolled on institutions of higher education in the Republic of Croatia in the winter semester of the 2006/2007 academic year. Data are collected through the questionnaire entitled the Registration Sheet for the Enrolment of Students on Professional and University Study (SV-20 form), which is filled in by students enrolled on all terms of professional or university study.

 

 

Coverage and comparability

 

The statistical survey covers all students enrolled in the winter semester on all institutions of higher education on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. It includes students who enrolled or continued their studies according to the “old” programme as well as students enrolled according to the Bologna process. The survey does not cover undergraduate ABDs, since they do not enrol but only finish their study. Data are comparable to those from previous years.

 

 

Definitions and explanations

 

Students are persons enrolled on institutions of higher education. There are full-time and part-time students. A full-time student studies on regular basis either with the support of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports or by paying for the study himself. A part-time student studies on a part-time basis supported either by himself or by his employer.

 

Institutions of higher education are university and faculty and academy of art as its component parts, polytechnic and school of higher education.

 

Institutions of higher education can be public and private.

 

University is an institution that establishes and conducts university and interdisciplinary studies in at least two areas of scientific or artistic activity in a number of fields, as an autonomous and integrated process, indirectly or through its faculties, academies of art and departments.

 

University comprises faculties, academies of art, departments and institutes and other units according to the Law.

 

Professional courses can also be taught at universities.

 

 

Faculty is an institution of higher education, a component part of a university, where university studies are organized and conducted, and where scientific and professional work in one or more scientific or professional fields are developed. Professional studies can also be conducted there.

 

Academy of art is an institution of higher education, a component part of a university, where artistic studies are organized and conducted, and where top artistic endeavours and scientific activity in the field of art are nourished. Professional studies can also be conducted there.

 

University department is a component part of a university where university courses are taught, and scientific, artistic or professional work in a particular field of science or an interdisciplinary area are developed.

 

Polytechnic and School of professional higher education are institutions that establish and conduct professional courses. Polytechnic is a school of higher education that conducts at least three different courses in at least three different fields and cannot have schools of professional higher education as its component parts.

 

University studies prepare students for performing work in science and higher education, in business, public sector and society in general and also prepares them for development and application of scientific and professional findings. University studies are organized and conducted at  universities.

 

Professional studies provide students with an adequate level of knowledge and skills that enable performance of professional occupations and prepares them for direct entry into labour market. Professional studies are conducted at  schools of professional higher education or at polytechnics according to the Act on scientific activity and higher education (Official Gazette no. 123/03, 105/04).
