NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Source and methods of data collection
Data sources for the foreign trade statistics are Single Administrative Documents on imports and exports of goods. The Central Bureau of Statistics takes over the reviewed Single Administrative Documents from the Customs Administration of the Republic of Croatia in form of magnetic data records, and then performs further statistical analysis and publishes them according to the basic methodological recommendations of the UN Statistical Office and Eurostat.
Coverage and comparability
Statistics on foreign trade comprises all the goods exported from, that is, imported into the country. Data on foreign trade include both imports and exports based on gross inward and outward processing.
The values expressed are real values achieved at the time when deals were contracted (invoice values), which are then further recalculated according to deliveries at the Croatian frontier. The export values are calculated on the basis of the FOB parity and import ones according to the CIF parity.
The amounts expressed in foreign currencies are converted into kuna, US dollars and euro according to the current daily exchange rate lists, as determined by the Croatian National Bank, valid on the day customs duties are levied. The average exchange rate is used.
In certain tables, the sum total may not equal the sum of individual figures due to the rounding to thousand.
Since 1 January 2002, the Combined Nomenclature (NN, Nos. 113/01, 142/02, 184/03, 165/04, 145/05, 134/06, 124/07 and 140/08), the customs and statistical classification of goods of the European Union, with further national breakdown, have been used in data collection.
Data on exports and imports are classified according to the statistical procedures that are based on the combination of the actual and previous customs procedures.
Exports and imports are presented in tables I. 2. and II. 3. according to the MIGs 2009 criterion, so that data for five main industrial groupings within the NKD 2007. sections are processed by end-use of all products classified under the same division or group. Changes within MIGs 2009 are due to the implementation of the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 656/2007 of 14 June 2007.
Data by type of activities have been presented according to the NKD 2007. (NN, Nos. 58/07 and 72/07), which entered into force on 1 January 2008 and is based on the European classification NACE, Rev. 2, which is obligatory in the EU Member States. The implementation of NKD 2007. leads occassionally to the break in time series due to the changes in classification's structure. All relevant changes in the classification were published in the Methodology for Statistical Implementation of the National Classification of Activities, 2007 version – NKD 2007. (NN, Nos. 102/07 and 123/08).
Data are presented using production approach according to which export and import data are reported according to the manufacturing activity from which the product originates.
Goods listed under exports and imports, for statistical needs, are classified according to the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC, Rev. 4).
Data on exports and imports are reported according to the country of destination in case of an export, and the country of origin in case of an import.
On 1 January 2009 Indonesia withdrew its membership from the OPEC.
Since 1 January 2000, the new Customs Law (NN, Nos. 78/99, 94/99, 117/99, 73/00, 92/01, 47/03, 140/05, 138/06, 60/08 and 45/09) has been in use in the Republic of Croatia, which is in line with the European standards. The new Customs Law introduces a new document – the Single Administrative Document.
Only declarations approved in the customs office during the reference month are processed. This is the reason why the already issued data for previous months were changed during the year in order to classify later received Single Administrative Documents from previous periods.
The monthly data are being corrected until the final data processing for the current year is done (the middle of the next year). Until then they are considered provisional. The corrections of monthly data for the year 2008 were concluded on 29 June 2009 and, therefore, monthly data for the year 2008 issued in this Release are considered final.
