Source and methods of data collection
The source of the data for cross-border traffic of passenger cars, coaches, goods vehicles and passengers in the road cross-border traffic are the records of the border police of the Ministry of the Interior.
Coverage
The survey covers all road border crossing points irrespective of whether they are permanent or seasonal ones.
The data cover all road motor vehicles and passengers crossing the border and entering or exiting the Republic of Croatia.
Until the end of 2017, the Ministry of the Interior estimated data on road cross-border traffic of passengers applying coefficients of average occupancy of vehicles. From 2018 until the end of 2022, the Ministry of the Interior recorded the number of border-crossing passengers on the basis of systematic or targeted checks of passengers at the borders.
On 1 January 2023, Croatia became a member of the Schengen Area and therefore, road cross-border transport of passengers, passenger vehicles and goods vehicles is recorded at the border crossings with Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.
The passengers are according to their citizenship divided to domestic and foreign ones.
Road passenger motor vehicles are grouped into passenger cars and coaches and are sorted into domestic and foreign ones. Goods vehicles are also sorted as domestic and foreign ones.
The data on the entry and exit of passenger cars, coaches, goods vehicles and passengers include vehicles and passengers in transit through the Republic of Croatia. Passengers in the local cross-border traffic are also included in the total coverage.
Definitions
Border crossing point is a place intended for crossing the state border.
Border crossing points are determined as follows: permanent border crossing points for the international transport of passengers and goods with inspection services, permanent border crossing points for the international transport of passengers and goods, permanent border crossing points for the international transport of passengers, permanent border crossing points for the local border traffic and seasonal border crossing points for the international transport of passengers.
The border crossing points for international traffic are intended for the cross-border traffic of the citizens of the Republic of Croatia and the citizens of other countries.
The border crossing points for the local border traffic are intended for the cross-border traffic of citizens from a certain area of the Republic of Croatia and a certain area of a neighbouring country according to an international agreement.
