Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

BUSINESS ENTITIES: REGISTRATIONS AND BANKRUPTCIES

The statistics of registrations and bankruptcies include business entities operating on a market principle, with the number of registrations including crafts, while the number of open bankruptcies refers only to trade companies.

After disruptions observable in common trend in the number of registrations and open bankruptcies in the two pandemic years (2020 and 2021), in the situation of the spread of the COVID-19 disease, the year 2022 brought a recovery and returning to pre-pandemic trends.

The number of registrations and open bankruptcies in 2022 is very similar to the indicators from 2019. On an annual level, the number of registrations was only 2% less than the number of registrations in 2019, while the total number of open bankruptcies was 7.1% higher.

When observed on a quarterly basis, the number of registrations in the fourth quarter of 2022 was 7 048, which was 4.8% less than in the same quarter of 2019.

The number of open bankruptcies in the fourth quarter of 2022 was 10.8% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2019.

When comparing the data on the number of registrations by quarters, it can be seen that the trend in the four quarters of 2022 was similar to the trend in years that were not burdened by the circumstances of the abrupt spread of the COVID-19 disease.

REGISTRATIONS OF BUSINESS ENTITIES, BY ACTIVITIES

Observing the data on the number of registrations in certain sections of activity, that is, in groups of several activity sections according to the National Classification of Activities 2007 (NKD 2007.), the number of registrations in most groups of activities in the fourth quarter of 2022 increased compared to the previous quarter of the same year.

A noticeable decrease in the number of registrations compared to the previous quarter was registered in the activities of section H – Transportation and storage activities (21.3%).

The largest number of registrations in the fourth quarter, as in previous periods, was achieved in the group of activities from K to N – Financial and insurance activities, Real estate activities, Professional, scientific and technical activities, and Administrative and auxiliary service activities. They were followed, according to representation in the total number of registrations in the same quarter, by the activities of section F – Construction and the service activities of sections P to S (except S94) – Education; Human health and social work activities; Arts, entertainment and recreation; Other service activities.

BANKRUPTCIES OF BUSINESS ENTITIES, BY ACTIVITIES

Data on the number of open bankruptcies by activities and groups of activities in the fourth quarter of 2022 show an increase in all activities compared to the previous quarter.

The largest number of open bankruptcies (290) in the fourth quarter of 2022 was registered in the Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (section G) and in Accommodation and food service activities (section I) – 250.
