In January 2022 compared to December 2021, the number of persons in employment in legal entities amounted to 1 347 071, that is, it decreased by 1.3%. An increase in the number of persons in employment in legal entities was recorded in 11 activity sections, with the largest increase, of 3.0%, being recorded in activity section L (Real estate activities), which, in addition to the impacts such as the increased inflation rate in recent months, preparations for joining the eurozone and recent earthquake, may also be indirectly associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of persons in employment in legal entities decreased in eight activity sections, with the largest decrease, of 7.1%, being recorded in activity section I (Accommodation and food service activities), which indicates increased effects of the pandemic in the winter months, regardless of seasonal oscillations common for this activity section. However, activity section I, which proved to be the most vulnerable, shows a mitigation of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the fact that the number of persons in employment in legal entities in this activity section was significantly lower than in the previous month, the developments in the number of persons in employment indicate a recovery, as confirmed by the comparison with the same month of the previous year.
In January 2022 compared to February 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the number of persons in employment in legal entities increased by 0.7% in eight activity sections, with the largest increase, of 10.7%, being recorded in activity section J (Information and communication). It may be related to the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the increased need of citizens for information.
The number of persons in employment in legal entities decreased in ten activity sections, with the largest decrease, of 9.0%, being recorded in activity section B (Mining and quarrying). As in the previous months, the number of persons in employment in activity section L (Real estate activities) decreased significantly, by 7.0%, which may not necessarily be connected with the pandemic, but also with other circumstances, such as the earthquake in December 2020, which, in addition to the affected areas, had a significant impact on the capital of Croatia, as well as the increased inflation rate in recent months and preparations for joining the eurozone.
Observing the developments in the number of persons in employment and earnings, activity section I still shows a significant improvement in both categories, and the correlation of this section with the dynamics of prescribed measures against the spread of the infection is obvious. The number of persons in employment in legal entities remained unchanged in activity section O (Public administration and defence; compulsory social security).
In January 2022 compared to January 2021, the number of persons in employment in legal entities increased by 2.5% in 14 activity sections. The largest increase, of 10.2%, was recorded in activity section I (Accommodation and food service activities). It is important to note that the number of persons in employment decreased the most in activity section I in 2020, but regardless of the noticeable improvement in 2021, this increase was expected because the comparison base was significantly reduced in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic. As in the previous few months in 2021, comparing each month with the same month of the previous year, a significant increase in the number of persons in employment in legal entities, of 7.8%, was recorded in activity section J (Information and communication). It is most likely related to the COVID-19 pandemic, due to the increased need of citizens for information.
The number of persons in employment in legal entities decreased in four activity sections, with the largest decrease, of 4.5%, being recorded in activity section B (Mining and quarrying).
After the previous few months in 2021, comparing each month with the same month of the previous year, when the number of persons in employment in legal entities was decreasing significantly in activity section L (Real estate activities), in January 2022 compared to January 2021, this number increased significantly, by 6.7%. Although activity section L does not have a large number of persons in employment, changes in the number of persons in employment significantly affect the differences expressed in percentages. in addition to the possible impact of the pandemic, the previously mentioned impacts on this activity section are also possible.
