Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

According to provisional data, there were 4 437 deaths in the Republic of Croatia in February 2023. The number of deaths decreased by 3.9% in February 2023, that is, there were 178 less deaths compared to the five-year average (2015 − 2019) for the same month.

Observing the period since the COVID-19 epidemic was officially declared in the Republic of Croatia, the number of deaths increased by 12.4% in the period from March 2020 to February 2023 compared to the five-year average for the same period, that is, there were 19 671 more deaths.

In December 2020, the highest number of deaths so far in the Republic of Croatia in one month was recorded, that is, 7 608 deaths. Compared to the five-year average for the same month, it was an increase of 63.9%, or 2 967 more deaths.

The graph shows data on deaths by months from January 2020 to February 2023 and the average number of deaths for the period 2015 − 2019 by months. Data for 2022 and 2023 are provisional.

Please note that the provisional data on deaths are not fully comparable with the final data. The provisional data refer to the month in which deaths were entered in the state register, not the month of deaths.
