Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

Travel restrictions, border closures, quarantine regulations and the implementation of epidemiological measures in the Republic of Croatia and around the world in 2020 had a direct impact on the operation of Croatian travel agencies.

In 2020, the number of domestic tourists whose trips in Croatia were organised by Croatian travel agencies amounted to 160 thousand, who realised 620 thousand tourist nights. Compared to 2019, it was a decrease of 57.7% in the number of domestic tourists and of 55.5% in the number of tourist nights.

The number of domestic tourists who travelled abroad amounted to 52 thousand, who realised 205 thousand nights. In 2020 compared to 2019, there were 84.6% less domestic tourists who travelled abroad and 83.5% less tourist nights in the observed period.

Domestic tourists who travelled abroad mostly went to Italy (17.3%), followed by France (9.2%), Slovenia (9.0%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (8.3%), Austria (7.5%), Germany (6.9%), Turkey (3.2%), Hungary (3.1%), the Czech Republic (3.0%), Belgium (2.8%) and Serbia (2.7%).

In 2020, the number of domestic same-day visitors whose trips were organised by Croatian travel agencies amounted to 48 thousand. Compared to 2019, the number domestic same-day visitors in Croatia decreased by 84.4%, while their number on trips abroad decreased by 93.5%. Domestic same-day visitors whose trips abroad were organised by Croatian travel agencies travelled the most to Italy (33.8%).

The COVID-19 pandemic and epidemiological measures taken against the spread of the disease in Croatia and the world had a negative impact on the activities of foreign tourists in Croatia, who used the services of Croatian tourist agencies as well. Therefore, in 2020, Croatian travel agencies arranged trips with overnight stays in Croatia for 623 thousand foreign tourists, who realised 4.0 million tourist nights, which was a decrease of 77.5% in the number of foreign tourists and of 74.9% in the number of nights compared to 2019.

The largest number of nights realised by foreign tourists in Croatia who travelled through the mediation of Croatian travel agencies were realised by tourists from Germany (42.3%). These were followed by nights realised by tourists from Poland (9.5%), the Czech Republic (8.7%), Slovenia (7.2%), Austria (6.9%), Italy and Hungary (2.9% each), the United Kingdom (2.8%), the Netherlands (2.7%) and Slovakia (2.4%). The number of tourist nights from all these countries decreased in 2020 compared to 2019.
