TOURIST ARRIVALS AND NIGHTS IN COMMERCIAL ACCOMMODATION ESTABLISHMENTS, 2021

In 2021, there were 12.8 million tourist arrivals and 70.2 million tourist nights in commercial accommodation establishments, which was 82.5% more arrivals and 72.1% more nights than in 2020, when the pandemic of COVID-19 had been declared. The introduction and implementation of epidemiological measures aimed at preventing the spread of the infection of the coronavirus disease, which made tourists’ travels more free and safer, contributed to good tourist results.

Still, in 2021, as compared to the pre-pandemic 2019, there were 34.7% less tourist arrivals and 23.1% less tourist nights.

Domestic tourists realised 2.1 million arrivals and 7.4 million nights in 2021, which was 46.6% more arrivals and 35.8% more tourist nights, as compared to 2020. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic tourist arrivals decreased by 3.5%, but nights increased by 3.6%.

Foreign tourists realised 10.6 million arrivals and 62.8 million nights in 2021, which was 91.9% more tourist arrivals and 77.6% more tourist nights than in 2020. Compared to 2019, foreign tourist arrivals decreased by 38.7% and nights by 25.3%. There were 6.7 million less foreign tourist arrivals and 21 million less foreign tourist nights than in 2019.

The most foreign tourist nights in 2021 were realised by tourists from Germany, as much as 19.9 million, which was 31.7% of the total realised foreign tourist nights. Tourists from Germany realised an increase of 69.8% in tourist nights in 2021 compared to 2020, while, compared to 2019, the number of nights they realised remained almost at the same level.

This was followed by the nights realised by tourists from Poland (6.3 million), Slovenia (6.1 million), Austria (5.7 million) and the Czech Republic (4.8 million). Compared to 2020, all those countries recorded an increase in tourist arrivals and nights in 2021. Still, as compared to 2019, only Poland realised an increase in the number of nights, as much as 7.3%. As compared to 2019, a decrease in the number of tourist nights was realised by tourists from Slovenia, of 18.3%, Austria, of 19.5%, and the Czech Republic, of 4.0%.

The most tourist nights were realised in the group Holiday and other short-stay accommodation, as much as 37.0 million, which accounted for 52.7% of the total realised tourist nights in 2021. This was followed by the group Camping sites and camping grounds, with 17.5 million nights, and in the group Hotels and similar accommodation, with 15.7 million nights. All those groups realised an increase in the number of tourist arrivals and nights in 2021, as compared to 2020. Still, compared to 2019, they realised a decrease in tourist nights. Thus, in 2021, as compared to 2019, the largest decrease in tourist nights was recorded in the group Hotels and similar accommodation, of as much as 39.4%, followed by the group Holiday and other short-stay accommodation, with 19.8% less nights, and the group Camping sites and camping grounds, with 8.7% less nights.
