In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic left a mark on tourist arrivals and nights in non-commercial accommodation establishments. In 2020, there were 456 thousand tourist arrivals and 11.2 million tourist nights in non-commercial accommodation establishments, which was a decrease of 11.5% in tourist arrivals and of 14.9% in tourist nights compared to 2019.
Domestic tourists realised 119 thousand arrivals in non-commercial accommodation, which was a decrease of 14.6%, and 5.3 million nights, which was a decrease of 14.3%, as compared to 2019. Foreign tourists realised 337 thousand arrivals and 5.9 million nights, which was 10.4% less tourist arrivals and 15.4% less tourist nights than in 2019. Domestic tourists realised 44.7 nights on average as compared to 17.4 nights realised by foreign tourists.
Concerning the structure of the total nights of foreign tourists who stayed in non-commercial accommodation establishments, tourists from Slovenia realised the largest number of nights (59.0%). They were followed by tourists from Germany (10.3%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (7.2%), Austria (4.2%), Serbia (3.4%) and Italy (2.5%). Tourists from other countries realised 13.4% of nights.
Traditionally, the largest number of tourist nights in non-commercial accommodation establishments were realised in the County of Zadar, as much as 3.9 million tourist nights. The County of Primorje-Gorski kotar followed with 3.0 million tourist nights and the County of Istria with 1.8 million tourist nights.
