Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socioeconomic indicators

Since March 2020, that is, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Croatia, the real turnover of retail trade has been continuously decreasing; thus, in December 2020, it decreased at the annual level by 3.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. In entire 2020, the real, working-day adjusted retail trade turnover decreased by 5.8% compared to the previous year.

In December 2020, at the monthly level, the seasonally and working-day adjusted retail trade turnover was in real terms 0.8% lower compared to the previous month.

According to gross, unadjusted indices, the total retail trade turnover decreased by 4.1% in nominal terms in December 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year. The largest decrease in turnover was recorded in the following trade branches: Textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 31.1%) and Motor vehicles, parts and accessories for motor vehicles, motorcycles and related parts and accessories (of 26.1%).

In 2020, only three trade branches realised an increase in turnover compared to the previous year, as follows: Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 12.6%), Pharmaceutical and medicinal products (of 5.8%) and Non-specialised stores with food predominating (of 0.2%), while other trade branches recorded a decrease. Therefore, in 2020, the total retail trade turnover decreased by 6.0% in nominal terms compared to the previous year.

In December 2020, as compared to the previous month, according to gross, unadjusted indices, an increase in turnover was realised by six trade branches, while other trade branches recorded a decrease. The largest increase in turnover was realised in the following trade branches: Computer equipment, books and other articles (of 20.9%) and Non-specialised stores with food predominating (of 20.7%), while the largest decrease in turnover was recorded in the following trade branches: Retail sale via Internet or via mail order (of 25.1%) and Electrical household appliances, furniture and other household articles (of 5.9%).

In December 2020, as compared to the previous month, the turnover of retail sale via Internet decreased by 25.1% due to a significant increase in turnover (of 42.6%) in September 2020.
