Data on employment and unemployment are general information that give insight into the state of a certain country. It is not enough to know the number of persons in employment, it is also necessary to know their age and sex, their level of education and their representation in certain activity sections. All that allows for better understanding the situation on the labour market and enables adjusting to market trends and needs as well as more successful planning of policies and employment measures.
In 2024, the total number of persons in employment in the Republic of Croatia was 1 719 671, out of which 796 945 were women. Compared to 2023, there were 3.4% more persons in employment, and the number of employed women increased by 2.8%.
In 2024, there were 1 486 956 persons in employment in legal entities in the Republic of Croatia, and 700 397 of them were women. Compared to 2023, the number of persons in employment in legal entities increased by 3.3%, and the number of employed women by 2.8%.
The number of persons in employment in crafts and trades and free lances in 2024, as compared to 2023, increased by 4.6%, and the number of employed women by 3.9%.
The number of employed insured persons – private farmers decreased by 2.3%, and the number of employed insured female farmers decreased by 2.8%.
Men predominate in 11 activity sections, mostly in section F (Construction), while women predominate in eight activity sections, mostly in section P (Education).
In 2024, there was an average of 95 299 registered unemployed persons1). Compared to the previous year, that number decreased by 12.5%. There was an average of 53 234 unemployed women, which was a decrease of 8 907 persons compared to the previous year. The share of women in total unemployment was 55.9%, and of men 44.1%. The share of women in registered unemployment decreased, whereas the share of men increased by 1.2 percentage points compared to the previous year.
In 2024, a total of 149 739 persons were registered with the Croatian Employment Service, while a total of 173 158 persons were removed from the register.
On average, 14.9% of unemployed persons were persons with no work experience.
An average of 19 962 persons received monthly unemployment benefits.
Most persons, precisely 39.6% of them, were in their primary work age (from 30 to 49 years), while there were 35.4% unemployed persons aged 50 and over, and 25.0% young persons (aged up to 29).
