It is unimaginable for the modern world to function without electricity. Considering the current ecological circumstances of the entire planet, special priority should be given to energy self-production. At the same time, focusing on renewable energy sources is no longer just an interesting "green" option for the future but is increasingly becoming a requirement of today’s world. Therefore, energy statistics are one of the important tools for monitoring energy production and consumption, and an indicator in which direction energy policies can and should move.

Total gross production of electricity in 2023 amounted to 17 259 GWh, which was an increase of 21.6% compared to 2022. At the same time, the total net production of electricity in 2023 was 16 890 GWh, which was an increase of 22.5% compared to 2022.

The wealth of water resources has long been recognised as a huge energy potential. Almost half of the gross and net electricity production comes from hydro power plants. More precisely, in 2023 the gross production of electricity in hydro power plants was 8 173 GWh, while its net production was 8 147 GWh.

In 2023, the gross production of electricity in thermal power plants and CHP on fossil fuels as well as in thermal power plants and CHP on renewable fuels amounted to 6 218 GWh, while the net production was 5 895 GWh.

The other gross production of electricity was 2 868 GWh, while the other net production of electricity was 2 848 GWh.

The lifestyle of the modern man requires a large consumption of electricity, and reducing its consumption is a challenge for the world’s economies as well as for every individual. The total consumption of electricity in 2022 amounted to 16 665 GWh, which was a decrease of 1.6% compared to 2021.
