Data on employment and unemployment are general information that give insight into the state of a certain country. It is not enough to know the number of persons in employment, it is also necessary to know their age and sex, their level of education and their representation in certain activity sections. All that allows for better understanding the situation on the labour market and enables adjusting to market trends and needs as well as more successful planning of policies and employment measures.

In 2023, the total number of persons in employment in the Republic of Croatia was 1 663 522, out of which 774 932 were women. Compared to 2022, there were 2.7% more persons in employment, and the number of employed women increased by 2.5%.

In 2023, there were 1 439 796 persons in employment in legal entities in the Republic of Croatia, and 681 608 of them were women. Compared to 2022, the number of persons in employment in legal entities increased by 2.7%, and the number of employed women by 2.5%.

The number of persons in employment in crafts and trades and free lances in 2023, as compared to 2022, increased by 3.1%, and the number of employed women by 3.2%.

The number of employed insured persons – private farmers decreased by 1.3%, and the number of employed insured female farmers decreased by 2.2%.

Men predominate in 11 activity sections, namely section F (Construction), while women predominate in eight activity sections, namely in section P (Education).

In 2023, there was an average of 108 921 registered unemployed persons1). Compared to the previous year, that number decreased by 6.2%. There was an average of 62 141 unemployed women, which was a decrease of 4 521 persons compared to the previous year. The share of women in total unemployment was 57.1%, and of men 42.9%, and it remained the same as in the previous year.

During 2023 the number of new entrants registered with the Croatian Employment Service was 168 910, while the total outflow from the register amounted to 171 744 persons.

Out of the average number of unemployed persons in 2023, there were 14.9% persons with no work experience.

On average, 21 882 persons received unemployment benefits per month.

Most persons, precisely 39.7% of them, were in their primary work age (from 30 to 49 years), there were 36.1% unemployed persons aged 50 and over, and 24.2% were young persons (aged up to 29 years).
