Just as there have long been censuses or lists of natural persons, over the years it became apparent that it is also necessary to have a list of legal entities, more precisely the Register of Business Entities. The Croatian Bureau of Statistics has been managing it since 1974. The Register of Business Entities includes legal entities, state government bodies and bodies of local and regional self-government units and parts thereof (business entities)1).

The Register is updated every day by inputting new data on entry, registration, change and deregistration of a specific entity.

We could say that, in addition to numerous classifications, the basic division is into registered and active legal entities. Let us also emphasize that registered legal entities are all persons who, at the time of registration, had legal subjectivity status according to current regulations, while active legal entities, as the name itself suggests, have a certain activity status.

While the number of active legal entities stagnated from 2020 to 2023, their share in the total number of registered entities ranged from 56.0% to 58.3%. In 2024, their share significantly increased, more precisely, it was 72.2%.

1) The Register does not presently include natural persons engaged in activities according to regulations, foreign associations headquartered in the Republic of Croatia and business entities not headquartered in the Republic of Croatia.
