Foreign trade in goods is one of the key indicators of the state of the economy of a certain country and it gives insight into the dynamics of international trade and the structure of consumption and production. Data from this field of statistics create a platform for analysing the competitiveness of the economy and the influence international shifts have on the domestic economy. They also give the production sector useful insights into global consumer trends.
In 2023, the total export of the Republic of Croatia amounted to 22.9 billion euro, which is 1.2 billion euro less compared to 2022, or a 5.0% decrease.
At the same time, the total import was 39.6 billion euro, and its value decreased by 2.3 billion euro, or 5.4% compared to 2022.
The foreign trade deficit in 2023 amounted to 16.7 billion euro, and compared to 2022 it decreased by 5.9%, or by a billion euro. The coverage of import by export in 2023 was 57.8%, whereas in 2022 it was 57.6%.
The most important market for the Republic of Croatia was the EU, as foreign trade in goods with EU Member States accounted for 67.9% of the total export, which decreased by 6.3% compared to the previous year. Italy is a partner country to which almost the largest quantity of goods was exported in 2023, with a share of 12.2% in the total export and a decline of 5.2% compared to the previous year.
Import from other EU Member States in 2023 accounted for 76.9% of the total import and increased by 2.9% compared to 2022. Almost the largest quantity of goods in 2023 was imported from Germany, with a share of 14.3% in the total import and an increase of 8.3% compared to 2022.
In 2023, foreign trade in goods with third countries accounted for 32.1% of the total export, which decreased by 2.3% compared to 2022. Foreign trade in goods with third countries accounted for 23.1% of the total import, which decreased by 25.4% compared to 2022.
