Retail trade is a statistical indicator that plays a key role in understanding market dynamics, i.e. in monitoring consumer habits. Annual retail trade and other service activities turnover indices, which are important economic indicators suitable for analysing economic development, are used to measure the dynamics of change of this phenomenon.

In 2023, the working-day adjusted retail trade turnover increased in nominal terms by 7.8%, while it decreased by 0.7% in real terms compared to the previous year.

In 2023, the working-day adjusted turnover from service activities increased by 27.5% compared to the previous year. In the period from 2019 to 2023, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant decrease in turnover from service activities is visible, especially in 2020 compared to the previous year. After 2020, a progressive increase in turnover from service activities was realised, which had a positive impact on the national economy.

In 2023, the highest increase in turnover was recorded in Accommodation and food service activities (I), as much as 18.2%, Administrative and support service activities (N), with a rise of 18.1%, and Information and communication (J), with an increase of 16.9%.

In 2020, as compared to the previous year, the turnover decreased in all sections except in Information and communication (J), which had an increase of 20.4%.

Within section Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (G) the highest increase in turnover was recorded for the activity Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with a rise of 27.9%.
