Statistical data from the field of tourism are crucial for monitoring this economic branch, which serves as an important factor in creating employment and developing infrastructure and is indirectly one of the main pillars of a country’s economy. Precise collection and publication of data from this field enables decision-makers, investors and those employed in tourism to follow trends, analyse tourist behaviours and habits as well as predict future needs of this fast-growing market.

In 2023, there were 92.4 million tourist nights in commercial accommodation establishments, which was an increase of 2.6% compared to 2022.

According to the types of tourist resorts, the most tourist nights were realised in seaside resorts, 85.3 million of them, which was 92.4% of the total realised nights. Concerning the structure of the total realised tourist nights in seaside resorts, 92.6% of them were realised by foreign tourists and 7.4% by domestic tourists. In 2023, an increase of 1.9% in tourist nights in seaside resorts was recorded compared to 2022.

In August 2023, there were 422 thousand rooms, apartments and camping sites available to tourists, with a total of 1.1 million permanent beds. In seaside resorts tourist had 384 thousand rooms, apartments and camping sites at their disposal, which was 90.9% of the total number of available rooms, apartments and camping sites, with 1.0 million of permanent beds, which was 92.1% of the total number of available permanent beds. Compared to 2022, there were 1.7% more rooms, apartments and camping sites in seaside resorts, and 1.8% more permanent beds.

In 2023, Croatian population aged 15 and over took a total of 5.0 million private trips with overnight stays, out of which 65.4% were in Croatia and 34.6% abroad. On private trips with overnight stays in 2023, Croatian population aged 15 and over spent a total of 29.5 million nights, out of which 20.0 million nights (67.9%) on trips in Croatia and 9.5 million nights (32.1%) on trips abroad.

On average, six nights were spent on private trips with overnight stays both in Croatia and abroad. The average expenditure per private trip with overnight stays in Croatia amounted to 281 euro, while it amounted to 471 euro abroad.

In 2023, the survey included 224 nautical ports on the Croatian coast, out of which 85 were marinas. Their total water surface area was 4 823 256 m2 and there were 19 131 moorings. In 2023, there were 240 886 vessels in nautical ports, which was a decrease of 3.9% compared to 2022.
